From music downloads to accessing news on the web, the debate rages on about what and how to charge for content that's out there on the internet.
 
So, how do you monetize web content and activity? We have put together an expert panel from different areas of digital development to share their experiences of how they turned a profit on their IP.
 
What should and shouldn't be charged for? How do you charge for it and, with the internet encroaching ever further on our lives, what does the future hold for this rapidly changing landscape?

Richard Foster – Digital Director, Future Publishing
 
As Digital Director, Richard holds responsibility for the company’s digital growth strategy and for the successful launch on the web of many of Future’s major titles, most notably bikeradar.com, totalfilm.com and techradar.com.
 
Prior to joining Future, Richard held positions as Managing Director at Audience Science, the leading supplier of behavioural targeting technology, and Commercial Director of 24/7 Real Media, with a primary objective of building brand advertising programs across the 24/7 Network.
 
Richard has a broad background in the digital arena as well as time spent in magazine and newspaper publishing with The Economist and Guardian Newspapers Ltd.
 
 
David Maher Roberts – CEO, The Filter
 
David first started as a writer/photographer combo and founded his first media business at the age of 24 launching two national newsstand magazines in the UK – following which he amassed 13 years in magazine and web publishing, serving as Publishing Director at Future.
 
In 2003, David founded Future Plus, a creative content agency that provides tailor-made content. From 2004 to 2006, he served as Future's Digital Director for the UK & Mainland Europe and in 2007, David launched iSporty.com (a sports social network) and worked as a consultant for the BBC to help develop its digital strategy.
 
Since being appointed CEO in September 2007, David has helped transform The Filter from a business focused on music playlist applications to a world-leading recommendation and relevance engine for the digital entertainment industry. The Filter now reaches over 85 million unique users a month thanks to deals with customers that include Sony Music, thePlatform, DVDPost, We7 and Nokia.
 
Evan Rudowski, Co-Founder and Director, SubHub
 
Evan Rudowski began his career in the mid-1980s at Newsday and New York Newsday, where he helped develop and launch some of the earliest online newspaper efforts in the United States. Subsequently he was business development manager at News Corporation’s iGuide Internet venture in New York.
 
From 1998 through 2001 Evan was managing director of Excite Europe. Before moving to the UK, he ran Excite’s City.net travel service, turning it into the number one travel site on the web.
 
Evan earned his Masters degree in 1993 from the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. He earned his B.A. in Communication Arts in 1986 from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York.
 
Nigel Beaham-Powell, Associate Senior Lecturer: Commercial Music, Bath Spa University
 
In addition to teaching music business skills, copyright and composition for film and TV at the School of Music and Performing Arts at Bath Spa University, Nigel is also a writer/director at the Performing Right Society and a member of the British Academy of Songwriters and Composers.
 
Nigel has written over 400 scores for film and TV including Miracle of Carriage 456 (C4 2008) , Hotel Ground Zero (C4 2008) , The Miracle of Stairwell B (C4 2006) The Man Who Predicted 9/11 (C4 2005), Journey To The Centre Of The Earth (Channel 4, November 2004), Anatomy of a Sharkbite (Channel 4, December 2003).
 
He was a participant in the round table debate on copyright reform reported in the New Statesman June 2006
 
Tom Dowding, Co-Founder and Director, Mobile Pie
 
Tom Dowding is co-director of Mobile Pie, a development studio based in Bristol that creates games and entertainment for mobile devices. Running the company for 3 years, Tom has had to keep up with the cutting edge of mobile technology and has worked on projects at the forefront of what's possible on mobile.
 
Mobile Pie leads cutting edge research in games and mobile technologies and has worked with such prestigious clients as Hewlett-Packard and the BBC. The young company has already received such notable accolades as Channel 4’s New Mobile Game Developer of the Year and received the Media Innovation Awards’ Trophy 2008.
The company is now shifting its focus towards its own original IP and it has recently been identified as a ‘One to Watch’ by Bristol Media.
