Saatchi's Showdown to uncover 'Next Big Thing' in Art

Britart mogul Charles Saatchi is hosting one of the biggest art competitions ever seen.

Inspired by the likes of Myspace, artists have been encouraged to submit their work online, with the website (www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/showdown) already receiving more than 35 million hits.

Artists have the opportunity to display their pieces for one week with audiences rating the online artwork from 1-10.

Fortnightly votes will reduce numbers to finalists that will attend an X-factor style boot camp and will be mentored by Saatchi in television show Showdown, to be aired later on in the year on BBC2.

Saatchi's influence has been clear in his promotion of artists such as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and the Chapman Brothers. Therefore the lucky winner will surely have been touched by art world gold.

The huge online talent show will be reduced to just twelve finalists that will be monitored and mentored by Saatchi himself. Saatchi will also determine the final winner and ultimately give that artist overnight fame and potential worldwide stardom.

Saatchi urged anybody with "a fresh creative approach" to enter. The winner's work will be shown at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg in October and will also sit at the new Saatchi Gallery early next year, although the collector himself is barred from buying.

To enter your artwork, you will need to register with the site. You can submit one artwork for each round of Showdown, which runs for two weeks so that a round winner is chosen every fortnight.

To register, go to www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/yourgallery/register/ and make Bath proud!
