Artists announced for 'Not so Fast' textile exhibition
Not So Fast ! - An Exhibition by 20 Textile Designers & Artists
20 – 25 April - the Octagon, Bath
Not So Fast! is an exhibition by twenty textile artists and designers who bring together a glorious range of contemporary artworks and functional textiles for five days in April at the historic Octagon gallery in Bath. The show is curated by Carole Waller.
Each individual artist uses textile as a material or source for his or her own discipline, with intriguing techniques and results. Vibrant colours, sumptuous fabrics, tactile surfaces packed with meaning, depth and function, will interest and delight audiences alike.
Each exhibitor has a story to tell. The work ranges from individually designed clothes and accessories, to small and large scale textile hangings, and to interpretations of the metaphorical meaning of textiles through sculpture, installation and new media. Many of the artists have exhibited internationally and much of the work draws its inspiration from all over the world. This brilliant cross-over between the functional and conceptual is shown in one of Bath’s most iconic buildings: the 18th century Octagon. Work on show will be for sale.
The Artists • Alice Kettle – stitched textiles • Alison Harper - interactive textiles • Amy Houghton - animation installation • Terry Macey & Angelika Elsebach - designer clothes • Anna Glasbrook – Architectural textiles • Anne Selby - pleated Shibori silk scarves and boas • Annie Beardsley - recycled textiles and jewellery • Babette Martini - sculpture in mixed media • Brenda Miller fine - art textiles • Carole Waller - painted clothing and installation • Graham Hollick - interior textiles from India • Joan Levinson – drawing on fabric • John Krynick - knitting • Kirsten Glasbrook - woven tapestries • Liz Clay - couture felt accessories • Mathew Harris - stitched cloth • Morgan Ashard - bespoke rugs and carpets • Sue Bradley - knitted and embroidered textiles • Tim Parry-Williams - woven interior installation • Wendy Allan - translucent textile art. •
Carole Waller is a well known textile artist and curator, whose work is exhibited internationally and is in many collections including the V&A. She says of the Octagon: “The building itself was the motivation for the exhibition. It has an atmosphere of being in transition, empty of the signs of its past – it’s a perfect blank canvas for the artists I have invited to animate the space.”
