Summer festival guide and lion safari set to be a roaring success
Media Grand behind two new augmented reality projects

Bath-based company Media Grand is storming the city’s virtual technology scene with work currently completing on two key summer arts attractions.

The mobile technology company has been working closely with the organisers of both the ‘Bath Fringe Festival’ and the ‘Lions of Bath 2010’ public art project by creating a new location-based service for
anyone wanting to track down the lions, or festival venues, and learn more about them. “These layers show you points of interest based on your location and allow you to access more information on the destination object, or venue, by simply touching the screen,” said Paul Lewis of Media Grand.

“Both events are absolutely perfect for this new technology,” said Paul. “This phone application helps people find their way around the city. As well as being great fun to use, and saving paper, it also provides
another unique visitor attraction to Bath – particularly the city-wide augmented reality safari or eSafari, as it’s been dubbed.”

Paul and his team have used the ‘Layar Reality Browser’ to display real time digital information on top of reality though the mobile phone camera. “We achieve this by combining your GPS position, compass
bearing and the view from the device camera with digital information, which is overlaid on a transparent layer,” said Paul.

Layar has been used to create a virtual Beatles tour around London as well as a guide to the Disney theme parks, which is sold through the Layar browser, providing both map and event information – so that the
latest information is available at your fingertips.

Layar is available as a free download from the AppStore or from the Android Market. Users simply need to search for the name of the event – Lions of Bath or Bath Fringe – within their Layar application download.

Layar is currently available for the iPhone 3GS, T-Mobile G1, HTC Magic, as well as other Google Android phones.

“We’re delighted to have created a unique visitor attraction for Bath in the form of the eSafari, as well as bringing a new level of discovery to the Fringe Festival,” said Paul.

“Layar is fast becoming an increasingly popular choice for businesses to target niche brand promotion through innovative and exciting mobile technology.”

Media Grand’s current layers range from pub and shopping guides, to a 3D mask layer used to promote a national campaign to raise money for charity.
