This is a four-day film development workshop, aimed at helping you develop a compelling and marketable short film. You will be mentored through the process of script development, pre-production, directing prep and distribution. The goal for the end of the course is for you to have a clear plan of how to write, shoot and get your work seen.

What topics are covered?

Session 1

Script Development part 1 and Producing Short Films (funding, locations and collaborations).

Session 2

Script Development part 2 and Directing prep (lined script, shot list, references).

Session 3

Directing Prep 2 (Camera and Sound Language), individual mentorship sessions.

Session 4

Postproduction and Distribution plan.

Who is the course aimed at?

This workshop would be ideal for filmmakers that want guidance on how to complete a short narrative film, and then find an audience for it. The students could be new to filmmaking, or more experienced filmmakers looking for constructive criticism on their process.

Who will be my tutor?

Laurence Guy (Writer/Producer)

Is an award-winning screenwriter and producer from the Somerset Levels. He and Keith are currently in development with the BFI on their feature film Headwater. He has collaborated with Keith on several short films projects.

Keith Wilhelm Kopp (Director/Producer) Is an award-winning film director from the Pacific Northwest of America based in the UK. His work has screened at film festivals globally and has had been broadcast on Sky Showcase TV. He has also been a lecturer at Solent and Bath Spa universities teaching filmmaking and screen acting.

How will I learn?

Combination of lectures, individual sessions and some practical exercises. There will be some homework to do after each day.

Which department is this course in?

Creative Arts and Enterprise

Where will I need to go on my first day?

On your first day, please report to the Reception in the Roper Building at City Centre Campus.

What do I need to bring?

An idea for an achievable short film, that can be filmed with the resources at your disposal.

What else do I need to know?

You will need to do one hour of research and writing outside of class time for every session. The instructors will assist students with their developments plan, but the action of filmmaking comes from the students.
